Villa Borghese: Rome's Green Heart by E-Bike

Your ride begins near the English Academy, one of several prestigious foreign academies that line the park's northern edges — a reminder that Villa Borghese has long attracted artists and scholars from across Europe.

You'll pass the grand façade of the National Gallery of Modern Art, home to one of Italy's most important collections of 19th- and 20th-century works — an imposing landmark even from the saddle.

The park's namesake villa sits at the heart of the grounds, its baroque architecture framed by formal gardens. Your guide sets the scene: how a cardinal's private retreat became Rome's most beloved green space.

A playful pause at this elegant fountain, where seahorses rear up from the water. It's one of those details that rewards the slower pace only a bike can offer.

This sunken oval arena, shaded by tall pines, hosts Rome's prestigious equestrian show-jumping event each spring. Out of season, it's peacefully quiet — a perfect spot to take in the park's theatrical beauty.

Tucked among the trees, the Cinema dei Piccoli is one of the world's smallest cinemas and a childhood institution for generations of Romans. Your guide will share a story or two from its long history.

A neoclassical temple dedicated to Diana, goddess of the hunt, sits gracefully within the park's landscape — a folly designed for beauty rather than worship, and a favourite subject for painters over the centuries.

The park's romantic centrepiece: a calm lake with the Temple of Aesculapius rising from the water's edge. Rowing boats drift past, and the reflection in the water shifts with the light — worth a proper stop.

One of the park's most unexpected curiosities — a 19th-century clock powered entirely by water. Your guide explains the ingenious mechanism behind this overlooked masterpiece of Victorian engineering.

The ride's high point, in every sense. From Pincio Terrace, the rooftops, domes, and ancient skyline of Rome stretch out beneath you — a panorama that stops conversations mid-sentence.

Named after the architect who redesigned this part of the hill in the early 19th century, the Valadier Terrace offers another graceful vantage point over the city, with elegant balustrades framing the view.

You'll look down over — or ride through — one of Rome's grandest piazzas, flanked by twin baroque churches and anchored by an ancient Egyptian obelisk. A fitting punctuation mark on the park's western edge.

This 16th-century papal villa now houses the National Etruscan Museum, one of the world's finest collections of pre-Roman antiquities. Its exterior alone — all arches and formal gardens — is worth the detour.

Another of the park's international academies, the Romanian Academy adds to the culturally rich atmosphere of this corner of Villa Borghese, where art and diplomacy have long shared the same address.

The Belgian Academy is among the elegant foreign institutions that have found a home within the park's grounds, their refined architecture quietly complementing the surrounding gardens.

The final stop on the academy circuit, the Egyptian Academy rounds out the park's surprisingly cosmopolitan character — a fitting end to a ride that reveals how many layers Rome holds, even in its greenest corners.
